To connect a data collector to Windows Vista or Windows 7 you cannot use Microsoft ActiveSync. You have to download Windows Mobile Device Center from the link at the bottom of this article.
To find out whether your version of Windows Vista or Windows 7 is 32bit or 64bit, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. The version is listed after System Type.

Plug in your Data Collector then click the link below to download the Mobile Device Center software and install it.
When using Windows Mobile Device Center you need to make sure that you are using the proper cables to connect with your PC. Meaning the cables, or cradle, that came with your collector.
If you are using a data collector with a serial port you may need to use an USB/Serial adaptor if your computer does not have a serial port. Please see this article for more information:

In order to connect your Carlson Explorer to your desktop computer, the Carlson Explorer requires PCLink to be running while Windows Mobile Device Center searches for the mobile device.
First, note which port you are connected through on the PC (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.). Then, on the desktop of your data collector find and double tap the PC LINK icon. This will open a window with a message telling you that it is connecting to the PC. You may need to tap the PC LINK icon on your collector a few times until a small computer appears and stays on the taskbar of the data collector. The Windows Mobile Device Center will also notify you of a connection.
Sometimes connecting via Activesync or via Mobile Device Center in Vista can be a problem with Windows Mobile devices unless you disable "Advanced Network Functionality" so follow the steps below to disable it:
***Once you are connected, open up Windows Mobile Device Center
Click Settings / click Connections / USB to PC = disable "Advanced Network Functionality"
!!!Please note - if you can't get Connected you can try disabling the "Advanced Network" option inside the Data Collector if its an option by tapping Start / Settings / Connections / tap "USB to PC" = uncheck the box for "Enable advanced network functionality" / tap OK
