Land Desktop

I am not a Carlson user but was looking for some feedback regarding Land
Desktop for Surveying. This is what our company is using but the Surveyors
keep hearing that Carlson may be better suited for them.

I would suggest asking your question on a very active surveying board:

To me, the annotation features of Carlson (specifically Switch Bearing
Quadrant), make it much easier to use. Carlson has features *specific*
to surveying. Land Desktop has features compatible with surveying.

We started in 1999 with LDD v2. A year or so later we changed to V-2i. We
ran that for about 5-6 years. When we started lagging behind our clients in
version compatibility we were faced with the prospect of paying $8k per seat
upgrade. That's a lot 'o dough to a 2-crew outfit like ours so we shopped
for a while and settled on Carlson Survey standalone. Now that the learning
curve is nearly over it's looking like we made a good decision. there may
have been something better but I have few complaints. At a savings of $6k
per seat I can tollerate losing a few features.

Some dissadvantages of the change:
-I miss the AutoCAD tools.
-I prefer the cogo drafting in LDD. (line by direction etc.)
-AutoCAD shortcuts are nonexistant. I was used to "cp" meaning "copy". Now
you have to type "copy" or use menu clicks.
-I miss the ability to define lots by individual lines & arcs.
-don't even get me started on the text-editing.

Some advantages:
-The draftsmen and crews have the "field to finish" functions working quite
well.
-I make good use of the legal description writer
-I like the way the coordinate files are linked
-The customization is versitile. You pick your layer names, dimension
styles, etc. Plus you can save your settings to a file on the network server
and use it for the other workstations.

I think one of your disadvantages is not a missing feature. The Carlson
shortcuts can be customized (somewhat) to match the AutoCAD shortcuts.
For instance copy is 'co' by default in Carlson. I had changed mine to
'c' in LDD since I use it more than circle (which is 'c' in LDD and
Carlson). However, Carlson won't let you override 'c' for circle, so I
made 'cc' copy since it was just as fast and I didn't have to move my
fingers to find the 'o' for 'co'.

If you want to customize this, you need to change a .pgp file. The name
will vary by release version, but for 2004 its star.pgp. And for 2006
its surv.pgp

If you have trouble finding it, send me an email, and I'll help.

Your last post was a year ago... I just came across it. Carlson 08 has no PGP that I can find. It seems most posts dealing with customization were posted in 06-07. Any customizing hacks for the 08 version?
