Using Carlson Surveyor+ with Trimble R4

Wondering if this is possible.
Looking at replacing our survey gear, and one of the options is the Trimble R4. However it wont work with the TSC3, and my pickups involve a fair bit of text entry, making a glorified mobile phone an un-attractive option.
If the R4 could be used with the carlson controller, that would solve most of my problems.
I havent seen the R4 mentioned on the release notes for survce 2.5 or 3.0
Apparently it is possible to buy a release code for the R4 which permits use with the Trimble survey controller 3 - but at a price which puts them up with the R6 range of receivers anyway.
