DOS version and WIN XP

Postby Richard Preiss » Sun Jan 05, 2003 6:48 am

Has anyone successfully ran the DOS version of C&G under Windows XP? How
did you do it? Was the Hardware Lock recognized?

I have a new Athlon based computer with XP on it as well as a dual boot to
98SE. I cannot seem to get the DOS version to find the Hardware Lock under
either operating system. Any suggestions?

I have not had any trouble running the DOS version under 98SE before.

I've been working on that very same thing in windows 2000. You may already
know this, but C&G DOS needs to access the external ports directly. Windows
includes a "hardware abstraction layer" which acts as a liaison between the
programs and the ports. C&G DOS refuses to acknowledge the Windows HAL and
so Windows denies port access to C&G DOS. I believe C&G could publish a
very simple update to resolve this issue. I somehow don't think that will
happen. So after much research, I've discovered a program called PortTalk.
It's a wrapper program that lets any program you wish to have direct access
to the ports. You should be able to find the program at
http://www.beyondlogic.org/porttalk/porttalk.htm

The documentation isn't that great. You can get the port addresses from the
device manager. (control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager )
Double click the port in question and go to the resources tab. The address
is the first number in the input-output range.

I hope this can get you started.

I have tried porttalk and it has not worked for me yet. What executable
would you use in the command while starting CG for DOS. I tried it using
CG.exe

do you have the rainbow driver installed? in our office installing the
rainbow driver just caused more problems. with winxp sp1 and sp2 cg.exe
works fine by just double clicking it or running it from a command line.
now if you need to figure out how to transfer using the data collector email
me about that. this program is a pain in the butt and I have tried
contacting them about this and they said there is no solution, its a known
problem.

that program is interesting. i think they won't fix this problem because it
basically takes away the dongle copy protection.
