Icad98 Ver.5.10.13 - First topo........

Postby Ugly Bob » Thu Jan 30, 2003 5:38 am

All seemed to be going well - we created a points file with only the needed
points as the books says; drew the break lines; we had contours and a TIN
network; we drew an "include" boundary around the portion that we wanted
thinking this would cut off the unwanted contour lines that reached too far
off the property - everything was just as the book said it would be except -
the "swap triangles" and "process boundaries" options were not highlighted
and thus could not be chosen. What can the problems be? As far as swapping
triangles is concerned, is their use explained or do we just need to
experiment - AKA live and learn? Also, when first setting up the new
surface we have three options for "curve fit type" - no fit, fit, and C&G
spline. Where is it explained the differences and/or the benifits of using
one or the other? We chose for this topo the C&G spline option but when the
contours came on the screen (as the break lines were being drawn) they
appeared to be very sharpely angled - not smoothed as expected. When does
the smoothing take place? Thank you for your time.

We will check into the items that were not highlighted. In general,
everything is supposed to be highlighted if a surface is open. I have seen
this happen if the wrong menu has been loaded. This can happen when you get
updates because we currently only check if the C&G menus are loaded, not
the version. If you are running CGSurvey for AutoCAD, you can use the MENU
command (type MENU at the command line) and re-load the default ACAD.MNU.
Then close AutoCAD and re-run it. Our new menus will be loaded. If you are
running CGSurvey for IntelliCAD, type the MENU command and load the
CGICAD.MNU file in the CGSurvey with IntelliCAD 2001\support\ folder. If
you have any problems with the INCLUDE BOUNDARIES let me know. If you are
not careful to connect point to point around the area, it can cause
problems. You also have to make sure you end on the same point you started
with. I have done some work recently to make both of these a little more
forgiving. The curve-fit options only apply when the contours are written
to the drawing file. All contours shown in the surface are automatically
straight-line contours (for speed of editing). C&G Spline is our own
invention and creates a very good smooth contour. The FIT is AutoCAD's
spline function that fits the contour through all the elevation points. We
did not like the way it looked most of the time. Of course, No-Fit means
straight-line contours.
