USGS QuadTopo Maps

Postby D.L. Whidden » Sat Jun 23, 2007 12:21 am

I want to plot deeds on top of a USGS Quad Topo map. Is this possible?
What Quad maps are best to use with Carlson Survey 2004?

Where are you located? What Country, State, County, Town? Yes you can do
it, but what technique you use depends on what data is available, where you
get your images, etc. Also, what are you using them for? (Sometimes other
image types are more useful.) For instance, we use shape files provided by
the State of Maine for our feasibilty studies. Generally they are easier
for us to work with than the USGS topo quad images, since much of our
linework is already drawn for us, and they are generally based on the same
source.

I am in Lancaster, Kentucky. Most of my work is rural boundary work with
many old legal descriptions making references to creeks, top of ridges,
etc. and it would be helpful if I could plot the legals on top of a
QuadTopo map to rotate and move the plotted legal to fit the contours.
This sometimes helps in locating property corners.

For what you are describing the TopoQuads would be OK, but you might want to
look at the following link for free aerial photos:
http://kymartian.ky.gov/doqq/
Apparently Kentucky has a reasonably good library of aerial images, as does
our state, Maine. We use those for showing streams and fencelines om recon
sheets. The home site: http://kygeonet.ky.gov/ seems like it might be
excellent for downloading other datasets for use in preliminary drawings.
You may find ready made contours there. The aerial photos tend to come in
at the right scale if you also download the worldfile associated with the
photo. Also they tend to show fencelines, buildings, roads, utility
corridors sometimes even individual utility poles depending on quality.
This is great for plotting legals and overlaying them. Again, we do the
same thing for our worksheets. You can download MRSID image files or jpeg
images and worldfiles at the site above. Any questions feel free to ask.
