Symbols and Points

Is there a setting to detach symbols from points? For instance, if I insert
a utility pole symbol into a drawing and then later erase the points from
the drawing, the u.pole symbol disappears with the points (which I don't
want it to do obviously).

Thanks....Tom

Don't check "Group Point Entities" in General Settings window

That didn't work. I unchecked that box then brought in a u pole symbol on
top of an existing point. When I erased the point from the drawing it still
erased the pole as well.

Insert your symbol in a differrent layer than the points, freeze the points
layers instead of erase.

Thanks again for responding. To me this doesn't solve the problem though,
particularly since I don't like to keep the points in the drawing upon
completion.

- insert your symbols in a differrent layer than the points
- freeze the point layers
- wblock "myfile.dwg"
- erase "myfile.ini"
- open "myfile.dwg" that doesn't contain the points

Nava....I appreciate all of your ideas but it appears that my question has
long ago been answered.
"Is there a setting to detach symbols from points?"
The anwer unfortunately is no. So from now on I'm going to have to manually
insert symbols with the "insert" command. It's either that or keep
exploding them after insert, which makes for a sloppy drawing file.

Could Carlson please consider a setting to keep symbols and points
independent of one another? At least LDD prompts and asks you if you want
to delete symbols from description keys.

Thanks....Tom

There *IS* a way to do what you want. I don't have a copy of CS in front
of me to give you step by step though.

May I suggest giving Carlson a call (800-989-5028) and you should get
the answer in a few minutes instead of waiting days on the newsgroup...

Thanks for posting R.K. I'll call Carlson.

I prefer to post on message boards or a newsgroup whenever possible. This
way, a knowledge base is built up that others may also benefit from, which
in turn also benefits me. Why don't Carlson SW reps. frequent this
newsgroup regularly being that it is their newsgroup?

Using CS2004 (10-20-03 build) - when I draw points, then erase them, the point symbol stays in the drawing.

If you use the "Erase Points" routine from the "Points" menu - then yes the symbols are erased with the attribute block. But if you simply erase the point attribute block (using the standard AutoCAD ERASE command), then your symbols stay.

Another option is to use "Draw-Locate Points" and uncheck the field labeled "Point Numbers" - this will draw all your symbols without drawing the point itself. - Which is the same as drawing the points and erasing the attribute block.

That's a good question, ask them when you call.
