Hi Carlson Software,

I am familiarizing myself with the "Edit-Process Raw File" of the COGO menu
of Carlson Survey 99 to adjust a 4-sided polygon traverse with 2 adjacent
points as control points. In the raw file, I have created the following
records

1) two PT records (for P4 & P5)
2) one BK record (Oc pt is P5 and P4 the backsight point)
3) one TR record (P5 to 1)
4) one TR record (1 to 2)
5) one CL record (2 to 3 - pt correponding to P4)
6) one AB reocd (3 to 4 - pt corresponding to P5)

With P4 as the closing reference point, are these records correct?
Also, before I actually run Process/Compass, do I have to run Process/No
Adjustment? I ask because I always get a message saying P4 has no easting.

Also the angle balance option is activated, the program does not check
anymore if the angles balance after applying the correction. In my case, the
angles measured are angles to the right that are also interior angles and
thus they should add up to 360 deg.?

Lastly, while in the "Edit-Process Raw File" session, I notice that another
command it seems is being executed in the command line window and after
finishing the session, the command window is prompting me for something? And
when I try to cancel by pressing the ESC key, I fail at which point Carlson
Survey does not respond anymore and I have to force it to close via Windows
Program Manager?

It appears that all the data has been input in the proper fashion.

Also, before I actually run Process/Compass, do I have to run Process/No
Adjustment? YES. You need to establish the raw coordinates for the
points first before you balance.

I ask because I always get a message saying P4 has no easting. This could
be due to a couple of things. First does the PT record for this point have

the easting defined with a value other than zero. Process no adjust should
take care of this if the point has valid coords. Also, are you using the
actual point identifier of P4? If so, you must make sure that the
coordinate file format is set to alphanumeric. This is set in the
configuration menu of Survey under the General Settings.

Also the angle balance option is activated, the program does not check
anymore if the angles balance after applying the correction. Again,
first you need to establish the unadjusted raw coords first. However, when

the angle balance option is checked, the program does the angle balance
first and then the selected adjustment method. This is reflected in the
process results. The first closure report is before angle balance and then
the next closure report is after angle balance. In between the two reports
in the angle balance data. The angular error and the calc'd angular
correction for each traverse leg. The point comparasion shows the
adjustment of the points based upon the adjustment method chosen. After
this, there is no more closure calculation shown due to the traverse now
having no error. The angles are balanced and the coords are balanced. No
error.

Lastly, while in the "Edit-Process Raw File" session, I notice that another

command it seems is being executed in the command line window and after
finishing the session, the command window is prompting me for something?
I am not sure of what is going on here. Although, when you are finished

with your raw data session, make sure that you are closing the raw data
dialog. If you minimize the raw data window, you are still in the editor
although the displays shows the drawing screen, you cannot execute any
command until the editor is exited. This may not be the case, if not, let
me know and we will look into it further.

Some items noticed in your example. You are starting on P5 and closing on
P4. You will need to specify P4 as the closing point on the closure options
dialog. Although you have 2-3 tagged as a CL record, the program looks at
the beginning point specified and compares the closing point coords with the
beginning point coords. In your example you don't want this, you want to
compare point 3 with P4. In the angle balance dialog, you will specify
"From" point as P4 and the "To" point as P5. This will compare the measured
bearing/azimuth between point 3 and 4 with the know bearing/azimuth between
P4 and P5.
