Man, I recently upgrdaded from an old DCA standalone product called SVCP
(Survey complete). Contouring on that program was a snap: do some
polyline work, convert them to fault lines, then select points. The
contours generated were always very good and I rarely had to go in and
rerun my routines. That program was a bit more limited than Carlson is,
but my god, I am having a bear of an issue getting decent contours to show
up with Carlson 2004. I have contours crossing themselves as well as
other contours, I have contour lines for elevations that are not in the
current .crd file (IE from 120 to 230 but no points have elevations over
115!), and many other issues. We are finishing a project in which we are
downloading the field data daily, then producing segments of the overall
job. Now we are completed with all the daily stuff and are trying to
combine all these jobs into one file then contour the entire site. It is
NOT going well. Even on smaller jobs where all the data is compiled
together and drafted we are still having a heck of a time.
Do I need to do some training on this product or was DCA heads and tails,
a better contouring program? I dont know if I can get an answer to my
current issues, I just want to know if anyone else is having as much
problem getting a decent set of contours from these routines.

Elevations from 120-230: Are you inserting any of the points or linework in
as a block? If you are, are you placing them on a point that has been
inserted into the drawing on the true Z value? Has your block been created
with points on the Z value?

Contours crossing: Do you have steep slopes with sharp bends? If so, try
changing the smoothing feature when creating contours.

When you are downloading everyday and contouring everyday, may I suggest
doing seperate inclusion lines. Everyday when you are adding to your
drawing, just create a new inclusion line around that area you do topo. That
might help out.
