Chipset Manufacturer and Crashing

I'm running the standalone Carlson Survey 2009 embedded acad w/ xp home on a dual core intel 4400 @ 2 ghz w/ 4 mb ram. I was previously running a 1.7ghz amd chipset w/1.25 mb ram, and it crashed often. I haven't had a single crash since switching machines!

I was under the impression that it just happens, but apparently the chipset makes a difference. It could be the ram, also, but so far, so good!
