fatal erros

Postby rosebgolf » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:53 am

I have been experiencing the fatal errors with 000 exception deal on every
drawing. i was told in 2004 it was my operating system. I now have window
xp pro and it happens more. I grew up on carlson but I am at my limits. If
I do not get a free up grade or patch that works i will switch to another
product. If I get sued for a problem you can bet carlson will be sued also.
Please Carlson Dooooooo something about this.
If anyone has found the answer please email me with the info.

Do you have the most recent version of the software?
I don't know what could be wrong. Do you have enough ram?
My problems have been few and far between. I Haven't had a crash/fatal
error in at least a couple of years, and I use Carlson Survey and SurvCE
daily. Perhaps there is a memory addressing conflict between software?

Don't forget that hardware and software can both cause problems. Video
cards (or the lack thereof) can cause major problems with CAD software,
be sure you have a video card with an appropriate amount of RAM and one
that is made by a popular manufacturer. On-board video is not the best
option most of the time.
Also, the operating system is important (all updates, etc.) but other
software installed on your computer can cause problems as well. A major
issue is anti-virus software that uses a lot of memory/CPU cycles for
its continuous monitoring.
Most software crashes can be attributed to a lack of RAM or a lack of
virtual memory. Either of these can be alleviated by running fewer
programs in the background.

As for my experience using Carlson, I have very few crashes. The ones I
do have are mostly my fault. I've noticed that if I try to draw points
in layers that are frozen, it will crash every time. So I just pay
attention when I do that. Also, if I use undo to change project info
(profiles, centerlines, etc.) and then run those routines again it can
crash. Of course, these are issues that LDD and CivilDesign have as
well. The program just can't handle some things.

PS-I run XP Home and still have very few problems.

Does this computer connect to the internet? If so do you have anti-spyware
software installed? Software like Ad-Aware and SpyBot can remove spyware on
your system that Norton or MacAfee cannot pick up. Computers infested with
spyware tend to have more frequent fatal errors. Spyware is just one more
thing to add to all of Doug's great suggestions..
