Help wt OS Points

Postby Shannon Knox » Sat Mar 08, 2003 2:25 am

What I am trying to do is create eop and boc points from a centerline and a
profile. I am using the profile to points command but, it's not working the
way I thought. First station range, there is a place to input the station I
want to start creating os points but, there is nowhere to tell it where to
stop and it in fact no matter where I tell it to start it creates point from
the first station to the last. Second I would like to label my points ep
boc ect but, there in no place to input the point description I want for my
offset points. Should I be using a different command or method? If what I
want is to calculate offset points for ep, boc ect how would you suggest I
go about it.

I cannot find a command to turn my profile into a 3D poly so I can offset
it. Also the points will now not line up across stations. Grade and curb
crews like to run string lines in the field so they always want ep and boc
stakes to line up across the road. We purchased Carlson Survey XML to
replace Agtek's COGO program which will create offset points over a
specified station range and elevation change it also connects the points
with cords so you can see all of your offset lines better. The only thing
it will not do is let you vary the offset distance and elevation change so I
cannot use it for tapers or supers. Everything about the Carlson program
seemed much more advanced and efficient, but maybe I should have spent more
time with the demo. I still think that I am missing something it just seems
to me that this function must be in the program somewhere. I have not
completely read the manual yet but, I will. If you have any more helpful
hint I will happy to hear them. If there are any other prgrams that you
think I should be looking at please let me know.

This works but it is a bit slow. For now I think we will use Agtek's Cogo
to create the points the import them to Carlson. What I would like to see
in future upgrades is a command to create a 3D polyline from a profile.
Also, I would like to see the profile to points command enhanced to allow me
to specify points to be created over a range of stations as well as the
ability to specify the offset point descriptions. By any chance do you know
of someone with Carlson to discuss enhancement requests.

Shannon,

The option to create a 3D Polyline from a profile exists in
Section-Profile Module of SurvCADD that works inside AutoCAD.
It's easy to convert the points created in CS XML to 3D Polyline.
If you break the CL polyline in segments as you need then using
Profile to Points you will get only the points you need.
The points numbers will be cosecutive, for example 301-357.
Draw 3D Polyline and type 301-357.
Use Points->CooRDinate File Utilities->Description for Points
->Range of Points:type 301-357
->Description to Assign:type CL
Draw Offset 3D Polyline, type Horizontal offset amount and
Vertical offset amount as you need for EOP and BOC.
Interpolate Points->Interval Along Entity to create points
along EOP and BOC.
Assign Description for Points for EOP and BOC.
Feel free to email me if you need more help.
You can send me the profile and CL with your demands and
I will convert for you to points with descriptions.

After playing around with the software I pretty much followed the methods
you outlined but, it seams to me the hole process could be done in one
dialogue box. For now its just much faster to use the old Agtek Cogo
program and import the points (this is the only Agtek program I actually
like). I am thinking about getting an engineering design package at some
point in the future and I have demoed SurvCadd XML. I liked it much better
than SoftDesk 8 which is what I am familiar with but, it's priced about the
same a AutoDesk Civil Series so I could not make a choice now. The main
reason I decided to give a Carlson product a try is that based on what I
read on the Carlson newsgroup(s) they seem willing to incorporate users
requests into software updates. AutoDesk could care less you get what they
give you take it or leave it. There is $1500 dollars worth of other stuff in
SurveyXML so I am not regretting my purchase but, I am looking for software
that will work the way I want it to...crazy as it might be. Thanks for your
help I think I'm pretty much on track for now.

Shannon,

You can use the aplhanumeric point name capability of the Carlson Software.
When you create 3D points based on profile enter Start Point for example
CL1.
You will get the points numbered CL1,CL2,etc..
Working the same mode for EOP, BOC,etc... you don't need to add separately
description to points.
I understand that your scope of work is executions.
Pay attention to the option to Vertical Offsets of Profile in Profile to
Points Settings dialog that allows you to create points for each layer of
execution.
Also use the power of [Tools]->Cut Sheet and [Points]->[CooRDinate File
Utilities...]->Compare Points to create reports.
Hope this helps.
