Surface Questions

Postby GeoGeek » Fri Feb 03, 2012 1:31 am

Hello all,
I am new to Carlson and am looking for best practices/procedures/tutorials/etc. for creating surfaces. Particularly breaklines. I have done some experimenting with 2d polyline "proximity breaklines" and could not get that to work. The only breaklines that I could get to work was 3d polylines drawn from field to finish. Is this the best option? Are there any tutorials or movies regarding surface creation?
TIA

There are a few movies addressing this on this site, but they are rather sparse.
What I have done is in my FLD file I have all of my "breakline features" like top, toe, asphalt lines, concrete edges, etc. set to draw both a 2d and 3d line when I run field to finish.
I have the 3d polys go to layer "SRF-FLT" and the 2d polys go to their proper layers.
That way when I go to build my surface I turn on the SRF-FLT layer only for my breaklines.
I go into "Over Kill" on my point data. I insert the points at their Z value and I also tell the surface manager to use the crd file for data. Doesn't seem to hurt anything. Matter of fact, since I started doing this I find that I have to do less surface editing.
