Smooth Polyline

Running 2012, when I use the smooth polyline command and select more than one polyline I am prompted to enter a "contour interval". I don't remember this prompt in previous versions and haven't been able to figure out its function. Does anyone know what the purpose of this prompt is and what it controls? Thanks.
