I usually create a csv file of the points that I want to use in my surface - I don't really want to use all of the points in the crd (some have bogus elevations).
So, when contouring, I pick the From File option on the selection tab. This might solve your problems.
Also, I never put my points on Real Z. This caused me tons of headaches in the beginning, when I first started using Carlson, as it's the default option (or was). And you don't need it when using a separate point file for contouring.
Also, I have my F2F setup for a separate 3D polyline for the breaklines.
