Carlson survey 2006 Crash

Postby parsonsaw » Sun Dec 31, 2006 6:32 pm

I am using a Toshiba Laptop and was having the computer crash with a
unhandled
violation notice: After reviewing posted articles on this site, I was able
to resolve the problem with the following instructions. Thanks

Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
Within Services you should find “CA Pest Patrol Realtime”.
Right-click on this item, and go to Properties.
Where is you see Startup Type, you will also find a drop-down.
Please select “Disabled,” then Apply and OK.
Now restart your computer.

Mine's still crashing

Postby Terry Strickland » Mon Jan 01, 2007 7:15 pm

At the start of every new month my Carlson Survey will get the fatal
error and crash whenever I open up any file. I can't figure out if it's
Windows Defender or Mcafee Security Center. The only work around I've
found yet is to re-install Carlson Survey every month. It's getting to
be a pain.
I wish I knew what to disable to prevent this. It would almost be worth
not having any virus or other protection. I'm getting tired of it. If
anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated. I don't have the
"CA pest patrol real time". I looked for that.
I think it is the Mcafee Quick Clean that is the culprit. It runs at the
end of every month. I probably don't need Defender and Mcafee both
running, anyway.
thanks,
terry

Honestly, you don't need any real-time protection running unless you are
actively web-surfing a lot, and using IE. Just use a good virus scanner
to scan everything once a week, and something to spot scan new stuff
(like email attachments).

My suggestion is to get rid of McAfee. Especially the Quick Clean. No,
you don't need MS Defender and McAfee both. Defender is fine for what it
does. I would recommend Spybot Search & Destroy (also free) once a week
(or month) to check for any spyware that Defender misses. You might want
to look at AVG (grisoft.com), or Nod32 for cheap reliable anti-virus
protection.

The best solution is to remove the computer from acess to the internet
completely and you won't have to worry about any viruses at all. This is
usually not practical though with email, and research and such, but it
is a sure fire way to avoid viruses.

Back up and running

Postby Terry Strickland » Wed Jan 03, 2007 12:03 am

I've re-installed Survey and disabled the McAfee Quick Clean feature (I
hope). It was difficult to find how. If this don't do the trick, next
month I will be getting some different AV software.
After speaking with Carlson Support, I found out that many of the
register cleaning type programs wreak havoc with all Autocad based
products. I'll see what happens.
thanks for the help,
terry
