sid image files in Carlson?

Postby dw » Sat Jan 20, 2007 3:21 am

A state agency here in Texas has available on their website free
downloadable topos and aerials for the entire state. The topos are easily
brought into Carlson, and even come with a tfw file for scale and
geoplacement. The aerials, however, are in a devious format called .sid.
Sid does not appear to be supported by Carlson. Any ideas on how to
interface these sid files with Carlson (file conversion?), and if I may
trouble you further, any idea on how to place them to scale and on
coordinates?
Thanks.

It's not Carlson you have to worry about, it's the CAD engine.

Depending on your AutoCAD version, you may need the Raster Design Object
Enabler. Try http://www.autodesk.com/oe

IMO - MrSid isn't devious...
Also, LizardTech used to offer a program to convert MrSid to Tiff is
that is your only option.

I consider a software company that gives its software away to
state/county/city agenceis for free, which then turns around and
charges consultants for their software to create files in said format,
beause the state agency now writes that into their specs ... devious.

If the state agencies thought the software was so great and went out
and purchased it based on merit, I'd say that's cool. But influencing
them by giving it away so that they will require that format...

Lizardtech stills offers the "decode" tool at the following address.
http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_o ... page=tools We use it to
create *.tif or *.jpg files with world files to insert into our drawings
with the "geotiff" command. This is a command line utility, so it may take
getting used to for some, but it actually works great once you understand
the relationship between the image file and the world file. It can be used
to "crop" large *.sid files as well if you are interested in only a specific
area.

They dont charge for the converter that JJR recomended. Hardly devious,,
sounds like FUD to me...

Anyways... I wrote up a sid conversion how-to a few mos. ago.. search for
mrsiddecode under my name.. Kris, you should find it. If not let me know ill
repost.

You can insert .sid files directly into your drawing by using the
mapiinsert command. This inserts the sid image file at actual scale and
coordinates. Here in New Brunswick, Canada, the province also provides
free aerial images and I make use of them frequently. Ours come as a .zip
file which has to be extracted to a common folder (We call ours
Orthophotos) and after that away you go. Good luck.
