Ok, so I just upgraded to a new machine and so I had to install again.
On the new machine, CS2004 crashes with the good old "FATAL ERROR:
Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0054 Exception at 72ed44h" though the
address changes each time. Now I know we all get this crash from time to
time, but I get this crash with every single drawing (even a new one that
has nothing in it) within 30 seconds of starting the program, every single
time.
I can't do anything.

This is really frustrating. I have done everything up to and including
disabling every single other program I have and disconnecting everything
but the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
I looked for video card issues, but the newest articles on the autocad
forms about nvidia cards are from more than a year before my card was even
released.

Anybody?

I highly recommend upgrading to AutoCAD Civil Design or at the least
AutoCAD Land Desktop.

Lets face it. Carlson is on a downhill slide and their people are jumping
ship it seems. 2004 Survey was a piece of crap and all the others that
followed seem to be in the same boat (pieces of crap).

I mean when you come out with a piece of software that has an installation
propblem in 2004 and it follows all the way through to their 2007 product
you tend to get the picture that "they just don't give a rat's a$$ about
their product or their client's frustration level".

Maybe I'm just a statistical anomaly, but I don't have that much trouble
with CS2004. I've used Land Desktop, and it is a pain. The advantage it
has is its very comprehensive pipe (sewer) routine. Carlson's contouring
and topo generation is simple, quick, and accurate. LDD's contouring is
accurate, as long as you know what you are doing, and have the time.

I don't have that many crashes, the only time I have a crash is when I
don't save regularly (i.e. after something major like a large topo). The
only other issue I have had is when my hard drive went sour and lost the
display driver, but that wasn't Carlson's fault.

I would recommend to stay with CS2004. I agree with the other poster,
that it sounds like a Windows Vista problem. Do you have Vista on that
machine? (Most likely if it is a new purchase)

Go find an old install disk for XP SP2, wipe the hard drive clean, and
start over with XP. There is also the option of running it inside of a
virtual machine, but that isn't really necessary.

PS:Civil Design might be better, but it can't be that much better to
cost as much as it does. We don't produce enough to justify the cost of
Civil Design, heck, we don't even produce enough to justify an upgrade
to 2006.

This is a news group for professionals. Feel free to contribute with
something beneficial, otherwise keep your opinions to yourself. Carlson has
problems, as does every other software on the market. No one has adequate
testing prior to release, there will always be hitches in new software.
(Especially with the prevalence of Microsoft's operating systems.) At least
Carlson attempts to rectify the situation.

I bet you never had a one on one conversation with anyone in upper level
management at AutoDesk. I can reach the owners of Carlson if I want to.
Good luck with the overpriced software you "upgraded" to. Most small
surveying companies do not require the tools in those packages. I hope your
company does enough work in those areas to justify the purchase.

I don't have a solution to the problem, but wanted to comment on Carlson. I
just installed Carlson Survey 2006 on a new computer running Vista and it is
working fine. I use Land Desktop at work and Carlson Survey at home and
would much rather use Carlson.

I could not disagree more strongly with Mordecai Jones, you must be on a
different planet. I have been involved with survey software since 1970
when we programmed with less than 5k of memory. I was an original user
of Civilcad, Australian software which was used extensively throughout
Australasia. When Civilcad was slow to move to the windows environment I
looked elsewhere. My move to Carlson is one which I have no regrets.
There are always bugs with new software, and the number increases with
number of new options. I have had 100% satisfaction with the service
level and the responses to my concerns. There are lots of the language
and defaults which are very much US based, but I find the benefits in
the software far outweigh these not inconsiderable hurdles.

The advantage of accessing Autocad 2007 with the survey tools Carlson
provides is incredible value for money.

As an example of the service I had problems with installing the latest
update to 2007. I had emails and telephone calls within hours of my
request. The problem was solved within 24hours. And I think it was a
problem more related to the complications of Microsoft installer program
than Carlsons.
