We have TDS Recon collectors and also two Juniper Systems Allegros. The
Allegros run Carlson SurvCE which allows seamless data transfer from
office to field and vice versa. The TDS software has one or two routines
that are very nice in the field, (Inverse Point ot Line for instance) but
the data transfer isn't as smooth. (It actually isn't the data transfer,
it's the conversion from one file format to another, which isn't necessary
in the SurvCE software.) The Allegro is quite a bit more money but has a
keyboard while the Recon is exclusively touchscreen or navigation buttons.
I prefer the Allegro, my field crews tend to prefer the Recons. (They are
smaller and lighter.) They both freeze in extreme cold and cease
functioning. Feel free to e-mail with questions and good luck finding

I still use TDS on an HP200. It still works. I've used newer DC's,
including Carlson on the Allegro and Explorer.

I honestly don't see much of an advantage to upgrading. They still store
data and allow you to perform minor calcs. The transfer routine is a little
slow and buggy - but works.

I'd stick with what you have, until you have to change.

I couldn't agree more. We have been using the TDS on the HP200 for many
years now. It works really well. The little extras in the new versions are
hard to justify.
We download the cr5 file to the PC with windows terminal no problems then
convert the cr5 to a crd file. The cr5 file is kept in the field work
directory and the crd file in the carlson working directory. That way we
have a trail which has proved to be very useful in repairing and tracking
files etc., Terminal automatically archives existing files which are
downloaded from the 200 so we have a trail of fieldwork files for each
site visit. When we import the latest cr5 file we import to temp file then
"compare files" with the existing crd file and import the new data. It may
seem complex but has proven to be very useful.
