CS 2004 crashes

Postby John Bell » Mon Feb 02, 2004 8:11 pm

I recently "upgraded" from Autodesk Field Survey to CS 2004. I have had more
random crashes in a week with CS 2004 than in 3 years with AFS. I am running
XP pro. Any ideas?

What kind of crashes are you having?

Is the machine freezing or are you getting an error message?

If so, what does the error message say?

Our surveyors have similar crashes.
What can be done to find and fix these errors?

I know you say these crashes are random, but see if they happen when
repeating the same tasks. eg when plotting, using snap commands or working
on one particular drawing.

Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your plotters/printers
etc. and that any antivirus software you are running is compatable with the
AutoCAD OEM part of CS 2004.

If you are still having problems and haven't already done so, send an
anomaly report to the support team on the Carlson Web Site. They are usually
pretty prompt at replying and may be able to pinpoint the source of the
problem more accurately.

In addition to those tips - video cards and their drivers are to blame more often than not. Check the Autodesk newsgroups/support pages for reported problems with certain video cards - and make sure you have the latest drivers.

I have reviewed Autodesk newsgroup/support pages and can find no problems
with video cards, drivers, or antivirus software... now about your
software... I rarely ever had any problems with Autodesk Field Survey, which
appears to be almost identical to CS 2004, except for a few
additions/improvements. Why then am I experienceing several crashes per day?
Today I have been trying to erase points from drawing and have found if I
type in a range of points like 100-200 (it seems to only happen with 100 or
more points) it crashes and I have to reboot the computer before I can
continue working. I guess I can start keeping a log of what causes crashes
and what error messages I get, but don't beta testers usually get their
software for free? Many people ask me how I like this software because many
people are looking for an alternative to the pricey LDD/Survey software. So
far my responses have not been pretty. I have too much work to mess around
with figuring out why your new software doesn't work.

Funny thing is, it was the opposite situation for us. We had all sorts of
problems with AFS and close to zero help from AutoDesk. Hence our main
reason for going over to Carlson was the support they give - not that we
have needed it - our software is running virtually trouble free.

If you know you have all the latest hardware drivers (believe me - there are
plenty of hardware conflicts with AutoCAD 2004 - take a closer look at their
newsgroups) and still think its the software, then definitely contact
Carlson Support with your problem.

My apologies. I was indeed venting. You list your organization as "Carlson
Software" and I mistook you for a Carlson tech rep monitoring newsgroup. If
you have ever been "under the gun" and had your software randomly crashing
(and in one case corrupting a file so that it was not recoverable), then you
know where I was coming from. There are indeed many articles on Autodesk
support pages regarding video drivers etc. I meant to say there were none
that were applicable to me... Thanks for your help and please accept my
apologies.

You are right, I must have imported an old profile to set up that newsgroup account. My mistake. I haven't been with Carlson for about a year now.

Thanks for your help and please accept my apologies.

No apologies needed. I have been on both sides of the fence, and have seen problems such as you describe. Although Carlson routines could be to blame, consider that these routines are being used by many, many people every day *without* the crashes. It likely points to a hardware conflict....

What exact error message do you get when it crashes?
Does the crash happen during text input/output or when something is going on in the graphical editor?
What OS?
Have you tried running in "safe mode" (or VGA mode in WinNT)? If not, this is a good test.

We are having the same issues in our office; Carlson will unexpectedly
hit an error and simply close, like you never had it open. This has
happened many times since we bought the softwarea couple of months ago,
and on multiple operating systems (XP/2000). This is with Carlson Survey
and Survey/Roads systems.
Not good!

I had the same problem. I was told to uncheck the 'Link Linework with
Points' in the General Settings dialog box. I have not had any problems
since. Carlson need to either remove this option or the bug.

Hope this helps.

We found a bug with the old version of Carlson Survey Desktop we were
running on LD2004. When it was reported to Carlson they sent us a free
upgrade to protect our data integrity. Since the new version (Carlson
Survey Desktop 2.0) has been installed, I crash 3 to 4 times daily.
Usually no error messages, LD2004 and Carlson just close completely. I
have corresponded with Doc Whitson at Carlson and after he walked me
through a few possible causes, he came out and said they are working on a
patch.

My current work around is to save often. We have noticed this has slowed
the crash frequency. We also noticed sometimes purging the drawing
improved things a bit. No good fixes though, and I am still waiting for
the patch.
