Create the layer you want the image on and make layer current, then INSERT
the image. To get the aerial photo on the correct coordinate system, you
must either have Toolpac by Dotsoft or the GEOTIFF.lsp routine. I think
GEOTIFF was an old Survcadd command, but I'm not positive. Ask support about
that routine.

LDD or AutoCad Map would have additional tools as well.

As Jason noted, create an layer and activate the image command. In
regards to having other software is not completely correct. I insert
aerials and scanned images all the time with great success.

You do need to do a few things youreself.

You need the scale of the photo (1"=200'....etc)
You should get this from the souce of the document. This is very
important.

You need to know the images X and Y bytes
I use windows XP and when I have a file visible in the folder view and
selected, it display the image file's byte dimensions.

You need to know the image's physical dimension
I open the image in PAINT. Yes, PAINT, even if the image is 100 megs.
Once open, one of the drop down options is image attributes. This will
tell you the physical image dimensions in inches.

At this point, I calculate the scaling factor necessary for my image when
I bring it into AutoCAD.

Create a new layer for the image, activate the image command, select your
image, then in the position - scale - rotation window, I manually note the
scale and force a 0 rotation but leave the insertion point for manual.

Once I place the image over my existing work, I activate the properties
pallete for the image and make it transparent. I then move, rotate and
rescale the image to my work using identifiable landmarks.

Once I finish, I usually reactivate the properties pallette and record the
insertion details since this will have the final insertion coordinate, the
final scale (if I rescaled), and the rotation of the image. THis usually
takes me about 10-15 minutes max to bring in an non georeferenced document.

I have been using this to bring scanned images of Mine reclamation permit
drawings into my current work to insure that my current work is consistent
with what was approved 20ish plus years ago.

good luck, hope this helps.
