What can be done to eliminate an "unterminated complex entity" error message
when I try to add a curve table to an old drawing that has an old curve
table?

It could be a corrupt block definition in the old drawing. Try
beginning a new empty drawing and create a simple curve table. If it
works, erase it (don't undo), then insert the misbehaving drawing with
the explode toggle turned on.
