I recently spoke w/ Barkley RE: viewing raw files in XML vs. Notepad. I
have just discovered that I get that same difference viewing the same raw
file in XML vs. CES. I am afraid that XML actually creates sideshot
points
incorrectly in some cases. Attached is a raw data file that has not been
revised with XML. Please review with both programs and let me know if
fixes
to XML are required.

I am still learning what I am looking at when our crews traverse in the
collectors (TDS Rangers) and I think this problem is adding to my
confusion.

please review one of your raw data files with traverse control (one that
has
not been revised in XML) and print out versions w/ both XML and CES and
see
if you find differences. In the meantime, I will email the file to

Harley, this is a large raw file which makes inspecting every line of data
very time consuming, so I studied the first 400 lines of data. The only
difference that I see in the rw5 file opened in CES and the same file
opened
in XML is that in CES, some of the OC, tds code, is not being placed in
the
rw5 file. This is not a problem in itself, because the point will be
contained in the crd file after downloading the cr5 file from TDS. The
data
for each shot that I looked at was identical. Due to some of the notes
being arranged differently and a few OC records not being placed in the
file, the line numbers for the data is different. This doesn't mean that
the file either using CES or XML will process different results. I don't
think there is a problem here that will yield incorrect results.

In response to your first question concerning the notepad and XML
differences, this is due to the fact that when opening the tds.rw5 file in
notepad, it does not contain FD, BD, FR, BR records for d&r (direct &
reverse). Instead is has the meaned values for the shot and the d&r data
as
comments. When we read in this file into Carlson, we automatically
convert
the TDS d&r comments into Carlson d&r records (FD, BD, FR, BR). This
would
make comparing and reviewing the two files side by side very confusing and
difficult.
