Is it possible in survcadd CES to export a raw data file to star*net format?

Thanks for the reply Ric

I haven't purchased starnet yet...in fact I just ordered a copy of geospider it is a new product and they claim that they can import TDS raw data files and bluebook GPS files, no extra converter is needed. I am sure it is a step down from starnet, but starnet just seems to expensive! However, if geospider doesn't work out I will have to get starnet eventually.

CS,

I use a Leica with the native DataPro collection package.
I've been using Survcadd CES for a year now & after graduating thru Softdesk, InRoads, TerraModel, EaglePoint, & MicroSurvey, I'm finally home.
I've used StarNet since '95.

The only reliable way I personally know of to get ALL DATA into StarNet is:
1. Hand Entry.
2. Using Microsurvey, convert their native 'Traverse' file.
3. Use Star TDS ($200 from StarNet) & import a true TDS file.
4. Use Star SDR ($200 from StarNet) & import a true SDR file.
The data files will still need editing, but it's a very smooth process once you get used to it.

You can convert Carlson .rw5 files with Star TDS, but even for plain old traverse - sideshot data it's quicker for me to hand enter a .dat file.
As for importing a Carlson .rw5 topo file with Star TDS, forget it - it will drive you nuts - you have to insert a new H.I. every time you change
rod height.
A typical day for me will have 100 diferent rod heights.

The problems with the Star TDS conversion are:
1. A recognizable header does not come across.
2. If BS or BC are 0.0000 they do not come across.
3. No HI data comes across in the LS line.

I wonder if StarNet & Carlson could get together on this - my guess is that if they partnered they could clean it up with a combined 2 - 4 hours
admin & 3 hours programming between them.
I've talked to Ron Sawyer (StarNet) & Dave Carlson (617-254-5429).
They are both simpathetic, in fact Ron asked me to send him a typical file which I never followed up on.
I think we users would be better served if Carlson ported it to their export file option in the 'Edit Raw Data File' (like the Softdesk Fieldbook)
since Carlson will most likely update their .rw5 format over time.

Unfortunately, I think we StarNet / SurvCAdd useres are a very small group.
I paid $200 for the Star TDS routine - I'd spend more for a workable routine in a heartbeat.
I wonder if there are enough StarNet / SurvCadd users who would like to see a fix?
If a dozen of us pooled a $100 each, maybey they'd get together for us?

Hey, wouldn't it be great if StarNet used a portable license like ACAD instead of the new hardware lock?

Ric:

Huge Star*Net fan here. IMHO it is one of the most valuable programs in any
surveyor's bag. I would like to see Star*Net add a network license (hint,
hint Ron Sawyer if you read this). Seems we have similar backgrounds, I
have used TerraMODEL, HASP, Eagle Point for MicroStation, and finally have
started using SurvCADD and I believe we are finally using the best
surveying/design package on the market. I agree and concur that if Star*Net
and Carlson could work together that would be an excellent partnership.
With all the old C&G users getting familar with the SurvCADD universe,
adding a Star*Net collaboration would probably rope in a large percentage of
the surveying community.

Probably just a pipe dream, but what a nice dream it is.
