Attribute ID Question

Win98se/SurvCADD XML

I am working on a survey for a company that requires their layer & color
schemes. I have created a Point Attribute ID (survpno2) that would work with
their scheme. I don't want to change my custom survpno1 ID. I have run
"Configure Survcadd" in the File menu and changed the Attribute ID to "2". I
have opened the Point Defaults and changed the ID to "2". I have deleted the
block "survpno1" from the dwg and actually inserted a dummy point so that
"survpno2" is in the dwg. When I FTF my points, they still are processed
with the "survpno1" block. Does anyone know what I am missing? I am using a
dwg with the clients layers and I have created an FTF .fld file that does
process all points to the correct layers with my bylayer colors. The FTF
does not seem to want to use the changed ID survpno2. I have saved and
rebooted to make sure instance is new.

Jack,

Check your individual codes and make sure that the point attribute layout is
set to 2. Currently, you will have to change each code individually. Hope
this helps.

I thought I could just select all and just change the ID button. I was
shocked to find I was going to have to pick all 156 of my codes one at a
time, scrolling all the way. When using FTF then, does it even matter what
the ID says in the point defaults diag? I believe this routine needs to be
addressed by the programmers. There is plenty of room in the second row of
buttons in the FTF diag for a "Attrib ID" button. Of course the best thing
to do would be to remove it entirely from FTF, and let the "Point Defaults"
diag handle it like it should anyway.

Thanks for the tip.

Jack, this feature was specifically added by customer request. Many people
requested the ability to assign different attribute layouts for each code.
So it won't be removed. Fields defined in F2F override settings made in
Point Defaults (just like Layer, symbol, etc.).

Since the FLD file is ASCII, you can edit it in an ASCII text editor. This
would be faster than opening each code for editing.

I opened it in Notepad but could not find the Attribute ID. It's a nice FTF
feature and I am thankful to have this important option, but they need to
add that button so you can change Att ID for all codes at one time in the
FTF diag.

Thanks for your help. The codes were processed correctly with the proper ID
after I changed the codes individually.

Attribute ID is located in 4th field from the end.

Actually I did see it, but it was easier to just edit each code rather than
worry about which 1 or 0 I might have changed in that very confusing (all
over the place) ASCII file. I felt more confident that I changed it
correctly in the FTF diag. A simple button (like all the other features) to
change all codes to ID #2 for example is the way to go.

Let me correct that last statement. I did not see a |Point ID| in the
header, but I did see in the lines below a |1| that probably was the ID
(don't know for sure). Since a "replace" wouldn't work because the file is
full of "1"s, it was just easier to edit in the FTF diag.

I used to use excel as my FLD file editor. Since the file used by CES was
comma delimited, I could read the file into excel and each field would come
in as a separate column. This made global editing of fields very easy. In
your case you could have replaced all the "1"'s with "2"'s in just the
column you wanted. However the new format for the file in XML uses the ANSI
character 124 "|" as the field separator.

You can still use excel, but you have to specify ANSI 124 as the delimiting
character. When you are done editing the file, save it in "CSV" format,
which will use a comma to separate each field. When you open the file in
XML it appears to treat it like a CES file format and will read it in
correctly. The commas are replaced with the ANSI characters when you save
the file in F2F. This is also why the field code file is not compatible
with CES once it has been opened and saved in XML. Hope this helps.
