XML now deletes the slash character / when it processes the file and
displays it. It is still in your coord file, however, YOU CAN NEVER UPDATE
YOUR COORD FILE FROM DWG ON SCREEN. If you do, YOU CAN NEVER PROCESS THE
FILE AGAIN OR FTF WILL CONSIDER EVERYTHING AFTER THE NOW MISSING / AS A CODE
IT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND. BUG BUG BUG. I am always updating the coord file
from the screen dwg, especially when I have edited linework and need to Acad
Rotate and/or Translate.

Carlson - PLEASE FIX. I don't want to go back to CES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What command is deleting the "/" character, and where is it deleting it
from? You say it is still in the CRD file.

Regardless of that, when you run Update CRD from Drawing - if you will
answer NO to the question "Update point descriptions [<Yes>/No]?", then the
screen descriptions will not be written to the CRD file.

As I said, when running FTF, it now deletes the / character when it displays
the attributes on screen. They are still in the coord file. If you edit the
coord file, you can see the /, but if you update the coord file from the
screen (in Coord File Utilities), the / will be erased in the coord file. I
should not have to deal with this. Has Carlson hired a programmer from Eagle
Point? Why was this changed? There appears to be no valid reason. My
engineers NEED TO SEE the descriptions clearly, and they are easy to see
AFTER THE SLASH. They do not know what the codes are, but they ALWAYS KNOW
that the description for that point will be easily readable AFTER THE SLASH.
Please do not blow this off as being picky. This is a PROBLEM FOR OUR
COMPANY.

I'm using CES.
By default in FTF isn't the / a command code that intentionally replaces itself with a space followed by the attribute ?
How about "FTF" "Select Code Table" "Replacement for / Character" ?

Ric is correct, the "/" character is used to separate the code from an additional description. I just installed a fresh copy of CES. My CRD file is as follows:

1 5233.631 5099.324 0.000 FL/Post
2 5251.126 5173.606 0.000 FL/Pin
3 5244.456 5243.702 0.000 FL/Post
4 5211.774 5323.812 0.000 FL/Tree
5 5155.747 5406.592 0.000 FL/Post
6 5097.052 5465.340 0.000 FL/Missing

When I run F2F, the point descriptions on the screen are:

1 = Post
2 = Pin
3 = Post
4 = Tree
5 = Post
6 = Missing

This is how it is supposed to work, in both CES and XML - nothing was changed. The "/" character is NEVER printed.

You can achieve the results you are describing by editing the Description field for each code - add your own "/" character. See the following dialog:

I don't understand what you are saying. Perhaps I have a completely
different version of CES and XML than the rest of the world. In CES, when I
used FTF to process a coord file to screen, the / character was clearly
shown on screen (I pick "use code" for description in all my FLD files). In
XML, it is gone. How do I get the / character to appear on screen?

The fact that it prints the "/" is actually a bug in CES. F2F is NEVER supposed to print the "/" character (unless specified in the description field). The following paragraph is taken directly from the SurvCADD manual (both CES and XML).

A special character "/" (the divide key) can be used for an unprocessed description to append. Everything after the "/" is added directly to the point description and is not considered a code. For example, a data point with the description "UP / 150" with the same code "UP" definition above would be drawn with the description "POLE 150".
******************************************************

Per my previous post, if you need the "/" to print, you will have to add it to the description field for each code.

Thank you for responding. This is a problem for SEC and me. Let me explain
further. In all my FLD files, I have picked the "use code" as the
description option. Our surveyors use the / character to explain further
what might not be apparent in the simplistic codes I have created. Here's a
multiple code example:

C1 HVAC/4'x5'

This tells me a concrete pad code which is connected to 3 other codes called
C1 is being used as a Heating & Air Conditioning unit, which measures 4'x5'.
In this way I know the HVAC unit's size as placed in the middle of the
concrete pad which is drawn by linework from C1 to all C1's. Until XML came
out, I got to see the / character on screen after processing the coord file
with Field To Finish. This is very useful, as no one else knows EXACTLY what
my codes mean, but they all know that anything after the / is an explanation
that they may need. For instance:

MH/-8.23

is a code that puts the sewer MH symbol at the shot elevation, and the
engineers know that the invert of the MH is the Acad inserted elev minus
8.23 ft. They know that the invert is after the / character. That was a
simplified example. Here's another example:

TR2/IPS

That is an example where I do not want my IPS symbol to insert, only my TR
(traverse) symbol. Without the / character, since TR and IPS are both real
codes, FTF will place a IPS symbol (filled circle) on top of a TR symbol
(filled triangle). I will then have to erase all the IPS symbols on top of a
traverse point from the drawing, which is a pain.

BOTTOM LINE----------
CES has ALWAYS placed the / character on screen with the "appended
description" after it. I can SEE the / character on screen in EVERY ONE OF
MY CES FILES (800 files). I have changed ANYTHING since I upgraded to XML,
and yet I CANNOT SEE THE / CHARACTER on screen in ANY of my XML files (7
files). Tell me how to make XML's FTF work like CES's FTF. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Jack, please see my response dated 12/22 @ 9:55PM. It explains why CES behaves as it does.

I would suggest now that it was working correctly in CES regardless of what
the programmers intended, and now it does not work correctly in XML. Do you
see the problem with updating the coord file from the screen? I need to
update the desc most of the time. Once you have done this, you can NEVER
process the coord file again in FTF and Randall, NEVER is a long time. Put
this on a wish list for your next release in January. All of us here need to
have the / visible on screen. It separates the additional info for the
code(s) from the code(s) themselves. The way we append files here dictates
that we process the same file more than once. A programmer may not
understand that, but in real world engineering, it is necessary for us to do
this. I CANNOT add / to every desc because (1) we use multiple codes and (2)
I think it would give FTF a heart attack. It would ignore everything after
the first code with a "/". Please talk to the programmers about this. If I
could pay them to reverse the fix for the / in XML, I would. We really need
to see the / on screen.

The ultimate solution with a problem such as this is to provide an option to do it either way. SurvCADD XML has been out for 6 months - this is the first complaint about this F2F behavior - so obviously, it's not a problem for everybody.

I will advise the programming staff about your needs compared to the way it's currently working. A solution for everybody is needed.

It is true that "Draw Points" does display the / character, as well as the
"Update screen from coord file" routine. This is the EXACT reason I can't
understand what is different about FTF. Why can't FTF display the /
character? The answer is, there is no good reason. Unfortunately, neither of
these routines actually processes a coord file, each code a different
symbol, different layer, etc. I'm talking about 5,000 points, not 5 points.
