Annotate- Label elevation along polyline.

[Surveyor]

When I try to use this command, it gives me a message at the command
line.."Error: no data in alignment polyline" It never allows me to select
the polyline. It does not make a difference if I check "use points" or "use
polyline vertices"

Am I using this command wrong?
