Edit-Process Raw Data File Issue

Postby jshaw » Wed Oct 18, 2006 6:43 pm

Carlson 2007 (build 060615)
Autodesk Map 3D 2007 SP2
Trimble data collector files

There is an error in the way that Carlson 2007 handles importing raw data
for processing. The intended process should be to open Edit-Process Raw
Data, import the raw file, edit the data, process the data, and finally
save the RW5 file of the edited data. Currently, this will result in a
CRD file with bad coordinates.

To illustrate the error take a CRD that has correct coordinates in it.
Open the Edit-Process Raw File window. Select File | Print | Coordinates
and select ‘All’ coordinates. The listed coordinates should be the
correct ones. Now import a raw file that has PT codes with bad values.
Now when you select File | Print | Coordinates you will find that your
good coordinates have been replaced with the bad coordinates. Any actions
you do from this point will be based on the bad coordinates.

To prevent the bad coordinates from being applied to your file there is a
workaround. When you import the file, immediately save the RW5 file and
exit the Edit-Process routine. If you are prompted to ‘Save coordinate
file changes?’ choose ‘no’ or you will be saving the bad coordinates.
Once you have exited the Edit-Process Raw File routine you can re-enter
it, open the saved RW5 file, and continue to edit, process, and save the
RW5 and CRD without worry.

In the Edit-Process Raw File window there is an option located under
Process (Compute Pts) | Process Settings | Store Point Records that is
supposed to influence how the PT records are added to the CRD file. Even
with ‘Never’ selected this problem still exists.

As with any surveying comps the error is easily recognized if the good and
bad coordinates are thousands of feet different coordinately. Where this
problem gets dangerous is when the difference is only by a few feet such
as when using an adjusted traverse.

I could not duplicate the problem that you have described using plain
AutoCAD. I will have one of my techs running map give it a go as well. If
you want to discuss this further give us a shout or shoot me an email.
