Carlson Alphanumeric: This native Carlson format allows letters in the point numbers, and the point name can be up to 10 characters. Any combination of letters and numbers is acceptable.

Jason, (Carlson Tech Support)

With GPS/GIS becomming so much a part of surveying,
I've been comming across long point names. (more than 10)

Has this issue been brought up before?

Is there a way around this through the GIS module?

Use description and notes.
Description field is limited to 32 characters. Under notes, any number of lines of text can be assigned to the point.

First thing you need to do is go to Carlson Configure/General Settings and make sure you have it set to Alphanumeric point format. Then, Set a new coordinate file, name it and then be sure to change the "files of type" at the bottom to a .mdb format. Then you can import a text/ascii file that contains points with longer point numbers. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you.
