align over great distances

I have found with Carlson Survey XML that if I try and align a drawing with
points and linework from say an assumed coord system,(N5000 E5000) to a
State Plane Grid system (N500,000 E1,500,000) the points and lines go
haywire to some small degree. If I simply move the drawing close to the new
coords then align everything seems to go OK. Does this make any sense?

Are you talking about the AutoCAD "ALIGN" command?
If so, how are you specifying the source and destination points, by picking on the screen?

I've never seen this, but if you have something that can be reproduced, I would like to try it here....
