Fence diagram hatch problem

I am trying to generate a new fence diagram with strata defined hatches. It
worked on the CES and I don't think I have made any other changes. I can't
make it hatch anything. I have deleted the pattern name in the fence
dialogue to force it to read the strata defs. And no matter what hatch
scale is use after that, I always get a "can't hatch boundary" response.
