Changing Layers

Postby Jason Bly » Wed Feb 12, 2003 9:50 pm

I've been through this discussion before, but never really got it resolved.

Create a point on layer "PNTS" in a new drawing that contains only the
layer "0".
Create a new layer called "1" or whatever you'd like.
Now, window select the point, which should contain 3 objects (Point mark,
symbol and attributes) and move it to the new layer you created "1".
Now, try to purge the layer "PNTS".....it won't, even though there is
nothing on that layer.
If you "LIST" the attributes, notice Bock Reference Layer is "1", but when
it gets to End Sequence Layer it is "PNTS", this must be why I can't delete

the layer.

The only way to actually change what layer a point is on is to delete it and
relocate it. It sure would be nice to have a routine that allows me to
change what layer a point is on or to change the symbol for that point. I
don't think erasing and relocating is the best way this could be done.

An example of why I would want to change a point's layer from what the Field
to Finish routine place it on would be when the field located property
corner is place on a layer called "mon-fnd", if I compute the boundary and
hold that corner I place it on a layer called "mon-hold", on the other hand
if that monument is not the exact location of the property corner I would
place a computed point for where the corner should be on a layer called
"mon-comp".

Jason,

This is a known AutoCAD bug that has been around since R14. See http://support.autodesk.com/getdoc.asp?id=TS35474

Note that it has nothing to do with SurvCADD,

I'm using Survcadd XML and Win98. It is a common problem, however, when I
use the Survcadd routine under the Points menu - "Change Point Layer/Color",
it changes the end sequence to the new layer as well. This is actually the
first time I have used any routine that does that. Our systems may not be
configured alike, so it may not work for you, but it is working for me. I
always toggle "none" for separate layers/colors and I usually end up
toggling "pick points". Be sure to type in the exact layer name you want for
the new layer, "CLAYER" (current layer) does not work in this routine.
Survcadd seems to have many routines that overcome AutoCAD's limitations.
Good luck.

Jason,
I am going to reply to my own reply. I was incorrect. There are some files I
am using that the "Change Point Layer/Color" on a Survcadd point really
works and I have some files where it does not work. I don't have a clue why.
I am talking about the "end sequence" in the acad "list" of course. Sorry
'bout that.
