Speed of ACADMap 2006 and Survcadd 2006

Postby Joe Bishop » Mon Aug 08, 2005 9:25 pm

Hello all:

I have noticed quite a bit of speed difference from ACADMAP 2004 & Scadmxl 2
to the new ACAD 2006 and Survcadd 2006. I especially notice the slow up
when opening up Survcadd and saving drawings. Also when utilizing the
menus. Any ideas on how to improve the speed? Thanks.

I ended up switching back to plain Autocad because of the speed issue. There
were several things to try and speed up (search Autodesk knowledge
database), but none seemed to help us.

I'm running AutoCadd LD2006 w/Raster Design and SurvCadd 2006 and do not
have any problems with speed. Standard installation, with no tweaks. Takes
about 8 seconds to load AutoCadd/SurvCad and another 8 seconds to open a
drawing with a large aerial image.

That said, I did notice a huge increase of time in loading Autocad comparing
straight AutoCad 2000 vs. LD2006

I'm running Window XP pro on P4 3.2Gighz w/2 Gig RAM and a Radeon X300 video
card.

Are you pulling data off of an external network server?

I had installed and run demo of ACAD 2006 and I noticed that it loaded
noticeably slower than by older acad installation.

Yesterday I timed the start up and it took just under two minutes to load
acad/survcadd. Much too slow.

And this pc ran acad 2004/scadxml2 perfectly. It would load and be ready to
run in about five to six seconds.

It seems to load slower, but I have not seen any speed problems actually
running the program, the commands are just as fast. My Windows 95 433Mgz
computer at home runs AutoCad 2000 faster than it would run on Windows 2000
Pro.

Usually the first load up would take maybe 8 seconds, but after all the
files were loaded into RAM, it would load instantly. Only had 400MB RAM

This made a HUGE difference for us:

From Autocad knowledgebase ID: TS1051601

"The Map window skin can be toggled between the theme used by Windows® XP
and a Map skin by using the MAPSKINMAP command.
(Using this command will also resolve some issues with performance and an
error message--Just-in-time Debugger error--that pops up when you exit the
Customization dialog box.)"

I think it ran fine once it was loaded, but it was painfully slow opening.
It was also slow opening new drawings and switching between open drawings,
which is not acceptable to me.

The Mapskinmap command did make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! Thanks to you and to
Lon at Carlson.

Am I losing anything though in getting rid of the mapskinmap?

From Autocad Help:

"Turns on and off the polished, metalic appearance."

Wow... thanks Autodesk. Good to see that programming efforts were put to
good use.
