Tin file/ Contour Editing

Postby Rod1973 » Tue Nov 13, 2007 10:50 am

Help anyone,

I have some large dtm files 3000-7000 points. Creating the tin file and subsequent contours is no problem.

When I go into surface manager and either erase or edit triangle leg, Carlson replots the entire mesh and this process is unbelievably slow. compared to other dtm programs used the replot time after editing is instant whereas Carlson takes 30 secs plus for every single triangle edited or deleted. On these bigger job I am sure you can appreciate the time consuming nature of editing these tin files.

I have tried this on various computers in the office all being less thn a year old. In some instances I get a windows error message " virtual memory low" the ram is not a problem as there is 1GB.

I am wondering if others have this same issue or if there is something I can change to speed this process up.

I have an idea it could be involved with the allocating memory to mainatin the undo function ??? Not sure ???

Any help greatly appreciated.

Can anyone at Carlson Support offer an answer to the above post ?

Or am I to assume it is a just how it is and therefore the DTM editing functionality in Carlson is a farce ?

Autocad 2007 and Carlson 2008 build = 071101

I have tried this on a few computers so I really don't believe it is a hardware problem.

Using the Surface manager on larger jobs I utilize the Swap Tin edge erase triangle etc. routines a far bit.

In addition I have numerous times during this routine had a Windows Virtual memory low and after that the pc obviously pc slows.

As mentioned above it appears that using this function chews up the pc's RAM (maybe the cache memory for the undo function, I am guessing)

Compared to other DTM software the editing function in Carlson seems to be extremely slow in updating as it replots the entire mesh from scratch each edit. Unless I am doing something wrong.

Thanks for replying, I am sure this can easily be rectified I just need some pointers as to what the cause is.

AutoCad is plain 2007, which patches for autocad do you mean? Could you guide me in finding where to find out which patches I have installed.

Thanks

I think you can use help-about AutoCAD and select product information button. This should show what service packs are installed.

Had a look at the "About" Autocad screen.

Product name = Autocad 2007
Product Service Pack = 0
License type = Standalone - locked
Product version = A.54.0 (unicode)

There doesn't seem to be a reference to build or patches installed, unless its somewhere else to where I am looking.

I am hoping the product version and service pack is what you are refering to.

Getting this issue sorted will be a great outcome, so I await your help.

Thanks

The service pack number is the reference. It does not show any patches installed(service packs in Autodesk's world) so try the following link to download and install service packs:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps ... 8#section2

I would install any hotfixes and both service packs starting with service pack 1.

Thanks Jason

This is excellent, it has really sorted the frustratingly slow contour regeneration.

Although there seems to be an error message "Unhandled Access Violation....." on some of my older jobs I am hoping that this is merely due to having created them prior to the service pack installation.

Thanks again and now on to my other querry, please could you look at the seperate "Locking units" topic.
