Perpendicular offsets

I am using 2008 Standalone and I cannot find how or where I can do perpendicular offsets. I have used C&G for autocad in the past and I miss that function.

I can draw a line and then do (distance, perpendicular) but there has to be an easier function.

How about centerline->offset point entry. This lets you type a station(distance) and offset and a point is calculated.

Yeah I thought about that, but I already have points calculated. In the past it was part of the inverse function.

You need to know how far off a line a point is? If you do inverse, pick the point and then use the OSNAP for perpendicular(type PER on command line and press enter) then hold on the line you want to know perpendiculat to and you should see the snap symbol appear. We also have calculate offsets which lets you define a line or centerline and find the distance down the line and offset of the line to a series of points. if i wanted to know how far off points 23-37 were from a line i would use this command.

Thanks for responding. I am aware of both of those ways of accomplishing my goal. But, I was wanting the "old" way I was doing it. In the program I am used to (which I think Carlson bought) I can get the information and it not be graphically dependant. I don't want to have to draw lines everytime, not to mention all that scrolling and zooming. With it as an option in the inverse routine it was much faster.

It has been awhile since I used C&G... the function I am looking for is in the intersects routine of C&G Survey 6.0 that I had used.

You tell it a point number to start from, give it a bearing and then type in point numbers and it will give the distance and perpendicular offset from the the start point.

The CGSurvey 6 version had a Perpendicular function found in the Intersect routine which Carlson 2008 has a simular routine that is called Bearing Bearing Intersect with an Option for Offsets & creates a point.

in Carlson Software 2008- its the COGO>Locate at intersect>Bearing Bearing & choose OPTIONs & select OFFSET

If the Point is already on screen use the Calculate Offset Routine - CENTERLINE>Calculate Offset.... choose Points (ex. 1-2 for a alignment/bearling) then click point no#3 to get the distance perpendicular offset.

Ok now the centerline calc offset function does accomplish what I was looking for.

I couldn't use the point numbers to establish the bearing (start pt# 1 , Bearing Pt#2-#3, offset #4,5...)but I can function with this. It is still graphically dependant but I guess I will have to get used to that.

CHANGE IS GOOD RIGHT?

In the Calc offsets setup screen there is an option for centerline by. Here select POINTS and it should function as you are wanting.

Yes I saw that option. when I select it, it asks for the first point (start), then a second point (end).



Is there a setting I have wrong?

It does define the line by 2 points. If you want a string of points then you would need a centerline file or a polyline on the screen.
