Did you use the last version?(August 31,2005)?
Try without checking on "Hide Drawing Under Labels"

I am using the latest version of Survey 2004 (6/17/04). What do you mean

I here you Donald. This problem seems all to common in this newsgroup. I
too have been experiencing this problem. Not every file does it all the
time, but just about all of them do at some time. I found that having
fewer directory levels helps ie. don't bury your files deep in the
directory tree. Try not to use recovered files, this doesn't help at all.
Always save files before Contouring or running FTF or anything that is
complex. This program is far from being bug free.
I would like to push for a free upgrade to Carlson Survey 2006 for all
2004 users for our trouble and lost time. This has easily cost me $395 in
lost time. In fact I could have bought another license or 2 for the
amount of lost time I've had with crashes. Please add a reply to this
posting if you too fell that we should be compensated for what is
seemingly a problem plagued program. Let Carlson know that this is
unacceptable. I wish to support this program because I believe in it's
possible capabilities and ease of use, but I can't see myself buying 2006
on the back of what I've experienced in 2004

Andrew,
I have not only lost time, I have lost clients! I am lucky I have not been
sued. I'll tell you, I have a couple recorded surveys out there that might
come back and bite me. Here are some additional bugs that Carlson cannot
explain.
1) When I erase and reinsert points, using the Point Group Manager, many of
the points and there attributes are rotated and moved to different locations
on the screen. This is SCARY. Then, when I erase all of the points, the
ones that are rotated and relocated are still on the screen. They have
apparently become disassociated with the program so I have to erase them
"one at a time". Carlson has no explanation... I just have to live with it.
2) The program has a flaw in "Processing Raw Data". The last elevation
loop (elevation traverse) I conducted busted by over 2 feet. Upon manually
calculating the loop using the raw data file, the first traverse point had
an 0.80' error compared to Carlson's 'processed' file. The program can't
calculate the tangent of a vertical angle correctly! I'll have to manually
calculate the traverse from now on to cover my a**. More lost time.
3) Lately, when Carlson Survey 2004 crashes, the drawings have not been
recoverable so I have to restart from the latest auto-saved file. More lost
time.
I strongly agree with you that Carlson should provide free upgrades to
Survey 2004 customers since they are clearly unable to address the current
flaws in this program. I was also assured by Carlson's Support that a Final
Release (Update) of Carlson Survey 2004 was to coincide with the release of
Carlson Survey 2006. I was also told the this was done with all the
previous versions. The update never materialized. I guess they figured it
was better to not release it since they couldn't fix it.
I'll tell you one thing... If I do get sued, due to this program, I will not
be alone! I have documented every correspondence, phone call and news group
letters with similar problems.
Listen Up Carlson and do the right thing!

Just an idea but you can download Carlson Survey 2006 from the Carlson
website... http://update.carlsonsw.com/updates.php I know if you ask for
an evaluation key they will give you one.. try it it out. If you stop
crashing then perhaps an upgrade to 2006 is in order. (whether or not
Carlson will give it way.. thats a different subject, as far as updates
are concerned $400 is very inexpensive) If it still crashes you more
likely then not have a hardware issue (video cards are the most likely but
not the only cause) and even if you where to upgrade it would not do you
any good untill you fix your hardware issue.
Just an idea.

An upgrade for $395 is pretty reasonable. If you can compare it to the
endless Microsft upgrades of office and windows, this is well priced. I
think the priced is pitched to encourage everyone to upgrade. If we want
the
program to continue to improve we can't expect it all to happen for
free. There are a lot of good refinements in 2006. It is not without
problems
but I must say I have had good responses to most of my issues. The fatal
Error you refer to are more likely Autocad problems. If you look at the
Autocad newsgroup page the fatal error issue is common. I have had
problems
with the support directory structure which could be producing some of the
errors you have encountered. I want to keep a tight control on the
fonts, title blocks, plot styles etc., so I have one Support directory for
the
multiple users on our network. If you have errors or crashes which occur
on
every file, then there is a setting which is not correct or you have a
hardware limitation. I personally think Carlson are on the right track
and
with constructive feedback we will all benefit. And this is despite the
program being very much designed for the US market, I have been able to
adapt it to the Australian situation.
