2006. The procedure below creates a two step hyperlinking feature to
Carlson; double clicking on an OLE file opens that file which contains
hyperlinks to other files. This is a great way to attach the documents
used or created during a survey to the drawing file.
Programs used: Word 2000 and Carlson Survey 2006
Word: Create hyperlinks to files you want to have hyperlink access to in
Carlson
1. Open a blank Word document.
2. Click the Insert Hyperlink toolbar button on the Standard Toolbar.
3. Select the “Existing File or Web Page” button on the left side of the
Insert Hyperlink dialog box.
4. In the “Text to display:” text window type an identifying label for the
hyperlink. If you don’t type an identifying label in the “Text to
display:” text window, the file or web page name typed or selected in step
6 is used as the identifying label for the hyperlink.
5. To create a screen tip for the hyperlink, click the ScreenTip button
and type your message in the Set Hyperlink ScreenTip dialog box that
appears; click the OK button.
6. If you know the path and name of file being hyperlinked to, type that
information in the “Type the file or Web page name:” text window. You can
select the file from the “Or select from list:” scroll box list generated
by selecting one of the three buttons: “Recent Files:”, “Browsed Pages:”
or “Inserted Links:”. You can browse for a file by clicking the “File:”
button and drilling down to and selecting the file.
7. If you have selected a file that has bookmarks, you can include a
bookmark in the hyperlink and jump to that bookmark in the selected
document.
8. Create as many hyperlinks as you want to include in the specific
Carlson drawing file.
9. You can type additional information in the Word file to help explain
what the hyperlinked file contains.
10. Save and copy the Word file; it can be deleted after the Carlson
procedure.
Carlson: Paste the Word document into the Carlson document for which the
hyperlinks were created.
1. Open the Carlson file.
2. Zoom out; the clipboard file about to be pasted in the drawing will be
large and will be placed in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
3. Use Edit\Clipboard\Paste (or Ctrl+V) to paste the Word document in the
Carlson document.
4. The pasted file is an OLE file. It can be sized and moved to a more
convenient location on the drawing.
5. Check the hyperlinking. Double click in the OLE Word document; a Word
document containing the hyperlinks is opened. Click on one of the
hyperlinks; the hyperlinked document should open.
Word: If you saved the Word file, it can now be deleted. If you ever need
to edit it, just access it (recreate it) by double clicking on the OLE
Word document in the Carlson drawing.
