Attaching Images

Is anyone aware if there is a addon for Carlson Survey to be able to attach
MrSID images (.sid)?

Not that I'm aware of but you can convert the sid image to a tif, jpg...
and others by using mrsiddecode availble at

http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_o ... page=tools

You can also create world files, the directions are inculded. We use
this utility a lot, so if you have further questions feel free to ask.

Kris,

I downloaded the utility but haven't figured out how to run it. Can you
tell me how?

Thanks,
BKL

Sure, Here we go.

After you download the utility you must unzip it (use your favorite, Im
partial to iceows (www.iceows.com) its free and integrates into windows
very nicely)

In your newly extracted Mrsiddecode folder you will find 2 files
mrsiddecode.exe and a readme.txt...

Move mrsiddecode.exe to the system32 folder (c:\windows\system32\) this
will allow you to execute it from anywhere in the command line.

To use.

Ok so lets say I download realybig.sid from a web site and I want to use
it in a drawing. I save the sid file to my desktop and then open a
command line... now don't freak out, the command line is your friend. :)
So Start button, run, and type cmd (if you are on windowsxp) or command
(if you are on windows 2000 or less)

This should open a window ready for more commands. In this new window we
must first navigate to the direcory where realybig.sid is located.

If you have never used a command line read this or skip to the next
paragraph if you have.. NOTE the [CR] means hit enter don't type it out!
The command line shows your current directory, it most likely looks
like this
C:\Documents and Settings\*your-user-name\>
We want to Change our Directory to where our files are located. The
command for this is CD so if our files are on the desktop we would type
cd Desktop[CR]
this would change our directory and the command prompt would now read
C:\Documents and Settings\*your-user-name\Desktop\>
If we want a list of all the files in a folder we can type
dir[CR]
and we should get a directory listing of all the files in that directory.

So with the command line open we Change Directories to the Desktop
cd Desktop[CR]
and now we convert, the template is
mrsiddecode -i {input file} -o {output file} {Variables}, lets turn this
sid into a jpg. at the command prompt we would enter...
mrsiddecode -i realybig.sid -o smaller.jpg[CR]
or... sid into a tiff
mrsiddecode -i realybig.sid -o realybig.tif[CR]

It should start to convert our file, this will take some time depending
on the size of the sid, the speed of your machine and the file type you
output to. (jpg's are faster then tiff's for example)

If it does not convert something is wrong! Check your spelling,
commandline is quite literal, it has no idea what mrsidecode is only
mrsiddecode, same is true of your file names.

Please Read the README.txt it goes into detail about the commands you
can use and gives more information than I could ever type.

If you can't get this to work I wrote up directions for our office and
will send you a copy of that, it has pictures and may be more helpful
than this long ramble.

-Kris

PS. This is done from my home, I don't run windows at home, linux only!
So this is all from memory, I know this information is correct but some
of the directory structures may differ. I did my best. And I will send
out that PDF to you on Monday, it should help clear things up, a picture
is worth... you know.
