INIST30 Error during installation  (during Contour It installation)

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs.

SYMPTOMS:  When you attempt to install a program, you may receive the following error message:  ISINST30 caused a general protection fault in module _INS0433._MP at <memory address>

The error, caused by a Microsoft mouse driver, can occur if you are running Mswheel.exe. (a mouse driver for the MSWheel Mouse)

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, disable the Mswheel.exe program:

1.  Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

2.  On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

3.  On the Startup tab, click to clear the Mswheel.exe check box.

4.  Click OK.

5.  On the File menu, click Exit.

6.  Restart your computer.

7.  Install the program that generated the error message listed above.

8.  After you successfully install the program, repeat steps 1-6. In step 3, click to select the Mswheel.exe check box.

IN MANY CASES you may need to restart Windows in SAFE MODE and then install the software from a floppy disk or a file on the hard drive.  (CD players do not normally work in Safe Mode.)

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

Windows 98 includes drivers that support wheel functionality for both Microsoft IntelliPoint and Logitech wheel mice, and the mouse software is not required for wheel functionality. Note that some features may require that the software be installed. If you do not need the Mswheel.exe functionality, you can permanently disable it by removing the Mswheel.exe value from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
