"Sight" Survey  (SS118)

Illegal Function Call", Won't install, run or other unexplained GPF Errors

When installing "Sight" Survey on a Windows XP based computer the installation fails to start and you receive some sort of Illegal Function Call error or General Protection Fault (GPF) error.  You may have to disable the Video Hardware Acceleration (if allowed to do so by your video driver).  In all versions of Windows except Vista:

  1. Right-click your mouse somewhere on your computer desktop (not on an icon, but in a blank area of the screen.)
  2. When the menu appears, left-click Properties.
  3. Left-click the Settings tab
  4. Left-click the Advanced button (toward the lower right portion of the form)
  5. Left-click the Troubleshoot tab
  6. Use your mouse to move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None
  7. Left-click Apply
  8. Left-click OK

In Microsoft Vista:

  1. Right-click your mouse somewhere on your computer desktop (not on an icon, but in a blank area of the screen.)
  2. When the menu appears, left-click Personalize.
  3. Left-click the Display Settings link
  4. Left-click the Advanced button (toward the lower right portion of the form)
  5. Left-click the Troubleshoot tab
  6. Use your mouse to move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None
  7. Left-click Apply
  8. Left-click OK

Unless you are running games on your computer, you should not notice any effect from disabling the Hardware Acceleration.  You might also wish to try various amounts of Acceleration, but only accelerate up to a point where Sight Survey does not fail.

Note:  When you restart Sight Survey, you will get an error that Sight Survey cannot be loaded because of a conflict with another program.  Simply click RETRY.

If this does not solve the problem:  Open Windows Explorer (My Computer) and navigate to the C:\SightSrv\Program folder.  Right-click on the file LINE.BMP and then left-click on RENAME, towards the bottom of the menu that appears.  Rename the file LINE2.BMP.

Note:  When you restart Sight Survey, you will get an error that Sight Survey cannot be loaded because of a conflict with another program.  Simply click RETRY.
